Roof Above is North Carolina's most comprehensive homeless service provider dedicated to ending homelessness in the community one life at a time. Formed in 2019 through the merger of the Urban Ministry Center and the Men's Shelter of Charlotte, Roof Above has established itself as a pivotal organization addressing homelessness. With services spanning street outreach, emergency shelter, rapid rehousing, and permanent supportive housing, the organization reaches over 1,300 individuals daily across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above’s holistic approach aims not only to meet immediate needs but also to create pathways out of homelessness by providing supportive services tailored to each individual's unique circumstances. The Food Service Worker position at Roof Above plays a vital role in supporting the organization's mission by ensuring that nutritious meals are prepared and served efficiently to individuals experiencing homelessness. This is a full-time role requiring dedication, strong kitchen skills, and a heart for service. The Food Service Worker will assist in meal preparation, oversee kitchen activities when delegated, and uphold cleanliness and safety standards within the food service areas. Responsibilities include managing food preparation utensils and equipment, following established cooking and sanitation schedules, applying standard portion sizes, and helping coordinate in-kind donation organization. The role also demands excellent customer service skills and a commitment to Roof Above’s core values such as radical compassion, solution-orientation, and valuing others.
Candidates must be able to work nontraditional hours, demonstrate physical stamina for tasks including lifting up to 30 pounds and standing for extended periods, and possess reliable transportation. Serve-Safe Certification is required or must be obtained within six months of hire. Experience working with homeless populations is preferred but not mandatory. The work will sometimes involve supervising volunteers and requires the ability to perform duties with minimal direct supervision. This position is more than cooking; it is about contributing to a meaningful cause that supports vulnerable populations in the Charlotte community with dignity and respect.
- High school diploma or GED
- One or more years experience in hospitality, food services, or human service field
- Minimum of two years of experience as a Cook in a hospitality environment
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment, safe food handling, and safe transit practices
- Ability to prepare and transport meals
- Ability to safely operate agency vans
- Ability to effectively interact with diverse populations
- Clean driving record
- Possession of a North Carolina driver’s license
- Current Serve-Safe Certification or must obtain within six months of hire
- Reliable transportation to work
- Ability to lift 25-30 lbs
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
