Wichita Falls, TX, USA, TX Full-Time $40,300 - $52,000
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) operates travel information centers that serve as valuable resources for travelers across the state. These centers provide essential travel coordination and navigation information to both local and out-of-state visitors, promoting tourism and facilitating safe travel throughout Texas. Open 360 days a year, these centers play a crucial role in disseminating up-to-date information about local events, attractions, and travel conditions, reflecting Texas's rich cultural heritage and diverse geography. TxDOT, a state government agency focused on providing and maintaining transportation infrastructure and services, is committed to excellence in public service and community engagement. As part of its mission, TxDOT employs Travel Counselors who play a frontline role in assisting travelers with their journey needs and enhancing their travel experience. The Travel Counselor positions, including Travel Counselor I and II, offer dynamic roles within these travel information centers. Travel Counselor I focuses on routine travel coordination and providing general travel information under moderate supervision. This role requires extensive contact with the public and involves tasks such as assisting with presentations to community groups, participating in emergency response efforts, conducting inspections of the centers’ facilities, and maintaining records and reports on visitor activity. The position demands working non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays, due to the centers' near year-round operation. Travel Counselor II, a more advanced level, involves performing complex travel coordination duties, often with greater independence and responsibilities, including training other employees. This role expands on the functions of Travel Counselor I by involving project coordination, promotion of tourism events, expense management, and inventory oversight. Travel Counselor II also plays a significant role in community engagement, conducting presentations, and coordinating with state agencies and private entities to enhance Texas travel promotion. Both positions require a valid driver’s license and successful completion of the departmental training program to become a Texas Certified Professional Travel Counselor within two years of hire. The work environment involves exposure to environmental conditions and requires physical stamina to stand for prolonged periods and carry light objects. Employment with TxDOT as a Travel Counselor not only offers the chance to contribute to the state’s tourism industry but also provides a pathway for professional development and public service. Whether engaging with diverse visitors, assisting in emergencies, or supporting community outreach efforts, Travel Counselors help shape positive travel experiences and promote the wide array of attractions Texas has to offer. Candidates seeking roles with TxDOT will find a structured yet rewarding environment where dedication to customer service, safety, and accurate information dissemination are paramount. This position is particularly suitable for individuals with skills in communication, emergency response, and a passion for travel and tourism.
