The Night Shift Traffic Control Technician II plays a critical role in maintaining safety and efficiency in roadside work zones during evening and overnight hours. This position involves the setup and takedown of lane closures on state highways and other roadways, ensuring safe traffic flow around construction or survey sites. Working independently or as part of a team, the technician operates various specialized vehicles such as MOT (Management of Traffic) and TMA (Truck Mounted Attenuator) units to protect workers and the public within the work zones. The role also entails assembling, delivering, and retrieving safety products based on contractor directions, supporting smooth and compliant project execution.
This non-exempt position requires a focused individual who can manage responsibilities under shifting traffic conditions and often challenging night work schedules. Key functions include deploying temporary construction signs, positioning arrow boards or variable message boards, and setting up traffic cones and other protective devices to regulate traffic appropriately. The technician continuously monitors the work zone to maintain compliance and adjust traffic control devices as needed throughout the shift.
In addition to these operational duties, the technician performs general shop maintenance and repairs to ensure that vehicles and equipment remain in optimal condition. Adherence to all safety regulations and company policies is paramount, as the role directly impacts the safety of both crew members and road users. Candidates for this role must demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to read and execute traffic control plans accurately, and the physical capability to handle equipment and materials. - Valid driver’s license
- 1-3 years of experience and 2,000 in field hours in traffic control
- Must be able to pass a background check, including motor vehicle records check
- Must successfully pass a drug test and meet federal DOT requirements
- Wear proper safety equipment (work boots with safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest)
- Basic reading and writing ability to comply with road signs, complete paperwork, and knowledge of federal and state motor carrier safety regulations
- Must be able to read plans and ensure traffic control plans are implemented and maintained
- Good knowledge of state and local roadways and experience operating delivery vehicles of varying sizes
- Ability to lift and move up to 70 pounds
- Must successfully complete the ATSSA TCT intermediate training course
- Willingness to travel statewide, with occasional overnight stays, and ability to work nights and weekends as required by projects
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule
- Mechanical background/experience preferred
