Hendersonville, TN, USA, TN Full-Time Negotiable
The hiring establishment is a specialized aviation control facility dedicated to ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient flow of air traffic within the non-movement areas of an airport. This facility operates under the oversight of experienced management and plays a critical role in maintaining airport operational safety by coordinating aircraft movements on ramps, gates, and taxiways. Utilizing advanced surveillance equipment such as radar-like targets, video camera imagery, and integrated computerized display systems, this establishment provides effective ground control that supports airport operations and helps minimize delays while ensuring compliance with established protocols. The role being offered is that of a Ramp Tower Controller, an essential position responsible for managing the sequencing, movement, and safe pushback of aircraft within the non-movement areas of the airport. The incumbent will work under the general supervision of the Ramp Tower Manager, who provides guidance especially when there are new or updated procedures and relies on the incumbent to perform independently once fully trained. The position demands detailed knowledge and quick decision-making capabilities regarding aircraft flow and the ability to utilize various electronic aids such as the Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (SMGCS), radar displays like STARS and ASDE-X, gate management software, and video camera systems. This role entails making critical decisions affecting the sequence and separation of gate traffic ready for pushback, planning the sequence of arriving traffic, and merging incoming and outgoing aircraft to provide equitable treatment for all while minimizing operational delays. The controller must ensure that communications equipment, video camera displays, radar, and gate management systems are functioning correctly and resolve any issues promptly to avoid disruptions. Additionally, the Ramp Tower Controller functions as an essential communication link between aircraft and the Federal Aviation Administration's Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) Ground Control. This responsibility includes issuing instructions on push-back timing, taxi routes, intermediate holds, and taxi clearance limits. The incumbent must also enforce local protocols such as the SMGCS during periods of low visibility and manage the Ice Threat Management and Gate Hold programs during adverse conditions. The position requires awareness and communication of flight field conditions, weather updates, navigational aids' operational status, and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS). The incumbent must also relay pilot-reported adverse weather, bird activity, or unusual airport conditions to the ATCT, maintaining situational awareness and contributing to airport safety. Another key aspect of the role is emergency preparedness; the controller must recognize potentially hazardous situations and promptly notify emergency services via established communication protocols. In addition to the operational duties, the Ramp Tower Controller must be prepared to perform lower-level tasks as needed to maintain proficiency and operational readiness. Providing on-the-job training to other personnel is also part of the responsibilities, ensuring knowledge transfer and competency within the team. The position is subject to rigorous drug and alcohol testing, reflecting the high safety standards essential in aviation operations. While previous aviation experience is desirable, such as a background as an airline dispatcher, pilot, air traffic controller, or experience handling aircraft movements on airport ramps, the organization values candidates who demonstrate a commitment to safety, strong decision-making skills, and the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment. This position provides a dynamic working environment within a crucial segment of airport operations, contributing directly to the safety and efficiency of air traffic ground management.
  • High school graduate
  • Previous aviation experience desired
  • Ability to work under stress and maintain attention to detail
  • Must pass drug and alcohol testing per non-DOT policy
  • Ability to operate communications and radar equipment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
