General Dynamics NASSCO is a leading shipbuilding company specializing in the construction, repair, and maintenance of commercial and military vessels. Located in San Diego, California, NASSCO operates one of the largest shipyards on the U.S. West Coast. This company is known for its commitment to quality, safety, and environmental responsibility, serving both commercial maritime and defense sectors. General Dynamics NASSCO values diversity and inclusion in its workforce and offers numerous opportunities for career advancement within the maritime and shipbuilding industries. The company is an equal opportunity employer, dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment that respects all employees' varied backgrounds and experiences. The role being offered is focused on managing critical operations related to shipyard pier maintenance and materials handling. Specifically, the position involves overseeing the management of materials lifts using cranes, coordinating subcontractor lay-down assignments, and controlling pier traffic to ensure smooth and safe movement of materials and personnel. Maintaining cleanliness on the pier is another essential aspect, alongside managing hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and trash disposal in compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations. This position requires direct engagement with multiple stakeholders, including ship force personnel, various contractors such as AIT's, Sima, and FitcPAC, and other service providers like forklift and crane operators. The employee serves as the primary point of contact for coordinating these interactions, ensuring that all pier activities align with safety protocols and operational efficiency. The role demands vigilance in enforcing NASSCO safety policies and proper material delivery procedures. Physical demands include lifting materials up to 50 pounds on occasion and working outdoors on cement piers under varying weather and noise conditions. This is a second shift position that does not require a security clearance, making it accessible to a wide range of applicants with the appropriate skills and experience. The pay scale for this role ranges from $56,300 to $76,700 annually, which reflects the candidate's skill set, experience, training, and educational background. General Dynamics NASSCO provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement plans, flexible spending accounts/HSAs, life and disability insurance, paid holidays, paid time off (PTO), wellness coaching, and onsite health services. Working under the supervision of the Ship Manager whose vessel is at the pier, this role interfaces regularly with tradespeople, subcontractors, Navy representatives, SWRMC production teams, suppliers, environmental agencies, safety representatives, and OSHA officials to resolve issues that arise on the pier. The successful candidate will be accountable for maintaining continuous material flow, ensuring environmental containment is correctly managed, handling HAZMAT responsibly and timely, and keeping the pier clean and orderly. This position is key to supporting the operational success and safety of shipyard activities. Overall, this role is ideal for candidates who have prior trade or production control experience, with knowledge or the ability to obtain forklift operation certification and HAZMAT training. Those who are physically capable of performing duties in a demanding shipyard environment and have a keen eye for safety and operational compliance will find this position rewarding. The role offers stability within a reputable company and competitive wages alongside valuable benefits, supporting a long-term career in shipbuilding and maritime operations.
