The Baggage Handler position at United Ground Express located at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is a full-time role that involves essential responsibilities to facilitate the loading and unloading of baggage and cargo. The role demands physical strength, stamina, and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. This position requires lifting bags, boxes, and cargo weighing up to 70 lbs frequently throughout the shift and sometimes handling over 100 items for a single aircraft. Operators in this role will push and pull loaded and unloaded carts, ascend and descend jet-way stairs while carrying baggage, and bend, stoop, or crawl to move and stack cargo inside the aircraft.
In addition to physical tasks, the Baggage Handler is responsible for safely driving ground support equipment such as tugs, belt loaders, and bag carts to help move the aircraft and transport luggage efficiently. They must ensure that aircraft interiors are clean and serviced, including lavatories, and must be able to read and interpret aircraft load sheets, baggage tags, and cargo labels accurately.
Baggage Handlers also play a critical role in preparing and securing the aircraft for the next flight, ensuring compliance with company-specific and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and policies. Communication with co-workers and flight crew using radio electronic devices is vital to coordinate operations effectively. Candidates must be comfortable working in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with mandatory overtime when required to meet operational needs.
This position requires a valid state driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and the ability to pass several pre-employment screenings such as drug tests and vision/hearing checks. Credentials such as fingerprint clearance and local airport badging are mandatory to maintain during employment. Employees must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
