The role of School Baker is an essential position within the food services division of the Hawaii State Department of Education, responsible for preparing and baking a variety of goods used in school meal services. This position is full-time and offers a salary of $5,054.00 per month, corresponding to the BC-06 pay scale. The School Baker works in a team environment, coordinating closely with other food service employees to ensure that all baked products are made timely to meet the demands of meal service schedules and satellite delivery needs. A significant responsibility is managing daily bakery production records, accurately measuring and mixing ingredients, and baking a diverse range of bakery items including bread, rolls, muffins, biscuits, pizza crusts, and specialty items like wiener in a blanket. The baker must also ensure proper setup and replenishment of serving counters, maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in work areas and utensils, and effectively manage leftover foods and inventory. The role may also include supervising cafeteria helpers and participating in ongoing staff development activities. Additionally, the baker needs to comply with USDA training requirements, maintain food safety standards, and apply mathematical skills to adjust recipes and baking quantities. • Graduation from high school or equivalent
• Six months of apprentice or helper kitchen experience with basic baking skills
• One year of experience as a baker producing baked goods in large quantities
• Knowledge of quantity baking principles, ingredients, equipment, and safety
• Experience must include the whole baking process
• Substitutions allowed for accredited culinary education
• Ability to meet experience quality standards
