The Maintenance and Operations Department at Edinburg CISD is seeking a dedicated Custodian to join the team at Barrientes Middle School. This is a full-time, hourly position offering a competitive wage range of $15.25 to $19.32 per hour and classified as non-exempt under the wage/hour status. This role is critical for ensuring that the school environment is conducive to learning by performing routine cleaning and maintenance services. The custodian will report directly to the School Principal and work 261 days annually, typically averaging 40 hours per week with variable hours as required by the school district. In this role, the custodian will maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the school building and grounds. The position demands physical stamina as it involves activities such as sweeping, mopping, trash disposal, lawn maintenance, and minor repairs including painting and plumbing. The custodian will operate various cleaning and maintenance equipment safely and efficiently, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, lawn mowers, and other hand and power tools. The ideal candidate should have a high school diploma or GED preferred and demonstrates the ability to perform repetitive tasks consistently without loss of efficiency. Previous janitorial experience is preferred but not mandatory, as on-the-job training will be provided. The individual must be capable of working independently, following both written and verbal instructions, and maintaining security after school hours. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry materials, climb ladders safely, and work both indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions. Key responsibilities include thorough cleaning of hallways, restrooms, classrooms, offices, and stairways; removing debris from sidewalks; mowing and tending to landscaping; setting up furniture; and ensuring the security of the school premises by locking doors and windows after hours. Additionally, the custodian is expected to identify and report maintenance issues promptly to the principal to facilitate timely repairs that uphold the safety and operational integrity of the school facilities. The position also requires adherence to safety protocols to prevent injury and ensure a safe environment for all occupants of the school. Working conditions present mental and physical demands, including exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, and temperature variations.
