This job opening is for a part-time Food Service Worker position at the Zion Medical Center in San Diego, California, with a variable shift schedule that may include working weekends, evenings, and varied days. Working hours range from early morning at 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, totaling approximately 21 hours per week. The role is part of the Dietitians & Nutrition Services category within the hospital's Food Preparation department and offers an entry-level position with an employment type categorized as regular and standard with union affiliation to OPEIU Local 30.
The Food Service Worker will operate under indirect supervision but is expected to be cross-trained in at least four critical areas related to food service activities. Two of these areas must include ware washing and patient trayline, while the other skills may encompass patient room service, food and supply inventory, receiving and storage, catering, cafeteria service, and food preparation. The role demands versatility and flexibility as the worker will perform duties that support the nutritional care and satisfaction of patients, cafeteria customers, and other hospital events or services.
The essential responsibilities include assembling patient trays according to specific menu and diet requirements, effectively operating dish machines and sanitizing kitchen ware to uphold cleanliness and hygiene standards, cleaning food service equipment and surfaces, transporting food and supply items across various medical and food service locations, and preparing food according to detailed instructions for use in diverse areas such as vending, catering, and patient feeding. Inventory management and supply maintenance are also critical to ensure adequate resources are available to meet customer needs efficiently.
Additionally, the worker will deliver catering items to meetings, properly store and rotate perishables, maintain logs to document processes and supplies, and perform other related duties as assigned. This position plays a vital role in supporting hospital food service operations, maintaining high standards for food safety, nutritional quality, and customer satisfaction. The successful candidate will be a proactive team player with good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
