The Flight Instructor position at Saint Louis University is a vital role within the university’s professional pilot programs. This role is designed for individuals passionate about aviation education and training future pilots in a rigorous yet supportive environment. The Flight Instructor will conduct quality flight instruction, ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and departmental policies. They will participate in continuous standardization training to maintain flight proficiency and operate advanced flight instruction equipment. The instructors are expected to stay current with new teaching methodologies to enhance their instructional effectiveness.
The position has two levels: Level I and Level II Flight Instructor. Level I requires a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate with the ability to provide flight training in single-engine aircraft, while Level II additionally requires an Instrument Flight Instructor (CFII) rating, allowing for instrument rating flight instruction. A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory, and all instructors must hold a valid medical certificate. Salary ranges from $40,000 for Level I to $44,000 for Level II Flight Instructors, complemented by comprehensive benefits including vacation, sick leave, health, dental, vision, and life insurance, participation in a 403B retirement plan with matching, tuition remission, and wellness programs.
This role demands strong interpersonal skills, effective communication abilities, a methodical and analytical approach to instruction, and the capacity to perform well under pressure. Instructors will engage directly with students, scheduling and delivering flight lessons according to detailed training outlines, ensuring accurate documentation and endorsements in student logbooks. The job also involves operational tasks such as managing aircraft ground operations and participating in departmental meetings and activities.
