Powhatan and Goochland County are jointly hiring a Farmers Market Manager to oversee all operations related to the weekly and specialty markets held in both counties. These counties have a rich tradition of supporting local agriculture and community events, and this role plays a critical part in continuing and enhancing these efforts. The Farmers Market Manager will report to the Parks and Recreation Directors of both Powhatan and Goochland counties, working closely with various stakeholders including vendors, sponsors, nonprofits, and entertainers to provide an inviting and successful market experience for guests and the community at large.
The Farmer Market Manager position is part-time and seasonal, averaging 15 hours per week during peak market months from May through October, and about 5 to 10 hours per week during the off-season months from November through April. This flexibility allows for a balanced workload while maintaining consistent engagement with market activities year-round. Through effective vendor management, promotional activities, and community partnerships, the Manager will directly influence the vibrancy and success of the markets.
Key responsibilities of the role include coordinating vendor applications, scheduling, farm inspections, processing registrations and payments, and ensuring compliance with health and agricultural regulations. In addition, the Manager is responsible for marketing the markets through social media and creating promotional materials such as monthly calendars, flyers, and signage. Managing specialty event markets throughout the year and securing sponsorships are also essential duties designed to elevate market visibility and community involvement.
The role demands strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills to effectively manage vendor relationships, resolve any complaints, and ensure smooth market operations. The Manager must also be present on-site during market hours, serving as the primary point of contact for vendors and visitors alike. Experience in managing government-related documentation and collaborating with departments like the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Virginia Department of Health to ensure legal compliance is important.
Moreover, the Manager will establish and oversee the SNAP-EBT program to increase food accessibility among low-income families, coordinating with nutrition education programs through the Virginia Cooperative Extension. The position requires budget management in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Directors and overseeing market facilities to ensure safety and enforce park regulations.
Ideal candidates are those with a working knowledge of Microsoft 365, Canva, and social media platforms and who possess excellent public relations and customer service skills. A background in farmers market management, event planning, community outreach, and fundraising will support success in this role. The ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, manage time effectively, and thrive in a team environment is essential. Additionally, candidates must enjoy outdoor work and interacting with diverse age groups.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to local agriculture support, community engagement, and healthy lifestyles by managing markets that provide fresh, local food and artisan products. The Farmers Market Manager plays a vital role in enhancing community connections, supporting local farmers and vendors, and ensuring a safe, regulated, and enjoyable shopping experience for all market attendees.
