The position in focus is primarily responsible for handling all inbound calls and messages directed toward hospital and medical staff within the facility. The communication associate or dispatcher must monitor and appropriately respond to alarms and codes while also maintaining precise on-call schedules for various hospital departments and physicians. Key responsibilities include ensuring that calls are answered courteously and routed correctly to their respective departments or individuals, aiming for an average answer time of 99 percent. Exceptional multi-tasking and interpersonal skills are necessary, coupled with the ability to handle various telecommunications systems, including telephone and computer technologies like ASCOM. The ability to work under stress, defuse tense situations, and remain friendly, polite, and upbeat is imperative in maintaining a professional demeanor, especially in emergency or crisis situations.
This role requires a minimum educational attainment of a high school diploma or GED and a recommended work experience of two or more years, preferably in hospital, emergency dispatch, or call center environments. Knowledge of medical terminology is considered advantageous for adapting quickly to the demands of the healthcare setting. The dispatcher must effectively manage and relay information, including monitoring codes, alerts, alarms, and drills according to established hospital policies and disaster management plans. The role also involves routine input and update of account notations, ensuring that outdated information is replaced and management is alerted to any system deficiencies or protocol changes that might affect service delivery. Accuracy in typing, with a speed of 40 words per minute or higher, supports the requirement for fast and efficient data handling during calls and message dispatching.
