The Traffic Monitoring Operator role is based in South Florida and offers a pay rate of $18 per hour. This position involves working with advanced technology platforms and web-based applications to monitor and manage traffic flow on state roads. Operators are essential members of the Transportation Management Center (TMC), a 24/7/365 program dedicated to incident management, traffic safety, traveler information, and effective communication with various stakeholders including the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and local emergency responders. The role requires constant vigilance over freeway traffic conditions using Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) software to detect, verify, and respond to events impacting safety and flow such as crashes, stalled vehicles, debris, and maintenance activities.
Operators will control devices like surveillance cameras, dynamic message signs, and ramp meters to monitor traffic and dispatch emergency response personnel to incidents. Communication is critical for coordinating with FDOT staff, first responders, law enforcement, and public agencies to clear incidents efficiently and keep motorists informed. The position demands technical proficiency in using software tools, excellent communication skills for multi-channel coordination, and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Operators must also update real-time traveler information, maintain equipment records, and participate in ongoing training to uphold the highest operational standards. This role plays a key part in enhancing roadway safety and traffic management in the Florida freeway system, providing essential support to keep traffic moving smoothly and communities safe.
