The Jr. Sous Chef position at Urban Plates is an entry-level leadership development role within the Operations department, reporting directly to the General Manager at the restaurant location. They are responsible for prepping stations before service and preparing mis-en-place for subsequent shifts, reinforcing efficiency and readiness in a fast-paced environment. A vital aspect of the role is to uphold safety standards by properly using kitchen equipment, applying advanced knife skills, and maintaining safe, clean, and organized workspaces. Additional duties include assisting with food and labor cost controls, managing inventory and purveyor listings, ensuring proper labeling, dating, and storage of products for optimal freshness and compliance, and fostering effective communication with both guests and team members to promptly address needs and solve problems. The Jr. Sous also sets the tone for the shift, assuming leadership responsibility for outcomes, and secures the premises during closing activities to maintain safety and security. Ideal candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 21 years old, and preferably have 1 to 2 years of experience in the food service or hospitality industry. Basic math skills and excellent communication abilities in English are essential, with bilingual Spanish speakers considered a plus.
