Currently, the UAS Student Housing office is seeking to hire Cleaning Crew student assistants for the 2025-2026 academic year, providing part-time custodial support for student residents and conference housing guests at the university. This role offers a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable employment experience while contributing to the cleanliness and safety of the campus housing facilities. The position is classified as a Student Assistant Level 2 role, with hourly pay starting at $14.96, making it an excellent option for motivated students seeking flexible, on-campus employment that complements their academic commitments.
The Cleaning Crew student assistants will be responsible for performing custodial duties within student housing environments, ensuring clean, safe, and welcoming accommodations for all residents and guests. The role not only supports the operational success of residential facilities but also helps students develop critical skills such as teamwork, customer service, problem-solving, time management, and effective communication. On-site training is provided covering important aspects such as equipment and chemical use, hazardous materials handling, and safety protocols, enabling candidates to perform their tasks confidently and responsibly.
Ideal candidates for this position should possess strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, and demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with diverse groups of people. They must exhibit strong judgment, problem-solving abilities, and conflict mediation skills, showing professionalism and maturity in decision-making. Organizational skills and the ability to efficiently complete assigned tasks are essential. Physical requirements for this job include the capability to perform labor-intensive activities such as walking across varied terrain and lifting or carrying loads ranging from 25 to 50 pounds.
Preference will be given to applicants who have prior experience in custodial or cleaning roles, as well as those who have at least two semesters of community living experience before their term of employment; however, these are not mandatory. Additionally, student employees must complete required UAS employee training, including safety training, Title IX, protection of minors, campus security authority, and FERPA, all within two weeks of their hire date, ensuring compliance with university policies and standards.
This hiring opportunity is designed for active University of Alaska system students enrolled in at least six credit hours during the current semester, or with an approved plan to enroll accordingly if between semesters, maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or otherwise in good academic standing. Students in non-traditional programs may also qualify with proper approval. While a valid driver's license and a clean driving record are preferred, they are not mandatory for employment. The role is based entirely on the UAS campus in Juneau and offers a part-time, flexible schedule suitable for balancing academic and work commitments. Employment is contingent upon successful background checks and adherence to the University of Alaska's ethical and professional standards.
