The role of Surgery Scheduler at Emory Healthcare specifically supports Houston Surgical Associates by managing the scheduling and coordination of surgical procedures and related patient care. This full-time position operates on a day shift, typically consisting of 8 hours per day and 40 hours weekly, focused on streamlining the surgical scheduling process while maintaining accurate and timely communication with patients, physicians, and operating room staff. The Surgery Scheduler’s responsibilities include initiating appointment scheduling, verifying important insurance details including pre-authorizations and certifications, documenting all patient interactions related to surgical scheduling, and ensuring that all necessary surgical and insurance documentation is correctly processed and submitted through electronic medical records (EMR).
A key function of this role is to work closely with various staff members such as physicians at Houston Surgical Associates, the operating room at Houston Healthcare Center (HHC OR), and the hospital ambulatory surgical center (HASC) to coordinate all aspects of surgical intervention and follow-up care. This includes scanning and faxing surgical consents, confirming insurance eligibility, notifying patients of any balances owed, and managing collection of payments prior to surgery. The Scheduler is also charged with resolving any scheduling conflicts and maintaining up-to-date and accurate patient records including operative reports prior to post-operative visits.
Candidates for this position should have at least two years of experience in a physician’s office or related hospital setting, demonstrating proficiency in medical terminology, medical billing procedures, and scheduling techniques. High school diploma or GED is required, and while no specific certifications are mandated, strong knowledge about insurance procedures including pre-certification, Medicare regulations, and alternate health insurance plan provisions is crucial. The ideal candidate excels at multitasking, communication, and administrative skills to effectively support the surgical team and ensure optimum patient experience. This role is vital in helping the surgical team maintain operational efficiency and exceptional patient service throughout the surgical treatment process, from appointment scheduling through to follow-up care.
