The role involves working a 40-hour week with flexibility to accommodate extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary, particularly during emergency or urgent situations. The primary responsibility of the Custodian I is to independently or collaboratively execute all aspects of janitorial and custodial care within the SMSU. Reporting directly to the Custodian II, the incumbent is tasked with ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all who use the facilities. Duties include thorough cleaning of assigned areas, dusting and wiping surfaces, sanitizing restrooms, removing trash and recyclables, polishing woodwork, maintaining floors, and supporting event setup and cleanup activities. The position also involves minor repair work such as oiling doors and tightening screws, monitoring assigned areas by locking and unlocking as needed, and reporting any facility maintenance needs. Safety is a key component of the role, with the custodian expected to adhere to all safety policies, including the university’s Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, and participate in safety meetings as required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules. Additionally, this position requires the operation and maintenance of custodial tools and equipment, including motor vehicles or electric carts for transporting supplies. While the Custodian I position may provide instructions to student assistants, it does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. Candidates must be physically capable of performing duties that include lifting and moving heavy objects up to 60 pounds, standing, walking, and handling various physical tasks in both indoor and outdoor settings. Exposure to environmental elements such as dust, chemicals, heat, cold, and noise may be part of the work environment. This role requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, with at least one year of custodial experience preferred. Candidates must be certified or willing to obtain certification in First Aid and CPR/AED within the first month of employment. The Custodian I must also demonstrate the ability to read and interpret safety and maintenance documents, write routine reports, communicate effectively, and handle basic mathematical tasks relevant to the job.
