Seattle, WA, USA, WA Full-Time $73,100 - $114,400
The Port of Seattle is a vital public agency committed to fostering economic growth, sustainability, and quality of life across the region. Managing one of the largest airports and container terminals on the West Coast, the Port operates a diverse portfolio that ranges from extensive transportation facilities to public parks. This dynamic and multifaceted environment presents numerous challenges and opportunities to advance trade, travel, and commerce while prioritizing environmental responsibility and equity. With a dedicated team and a strong emphasis on inclusion, the Port's vision is to reflect the diversity of its communities through equitable leadership and operations that distribute opportunities fairly and intentionally. The Port is not only a hub for moving people and cargo nationally and globally but also a reflection of its commitment to innovation, public service, and a sustainable future. The Safety Management System (SMS) Program Manager role at the Port of Seattle is a crucial position designed to enhance and maintain the highest standards of safety within airport operations and beyond. The individual in this position will be responsible for overseeing and managing various safety programs aligned with both federal regulations and industry leading practices. A core part of the job involves the interpretation and application of changes in federal aviation regulations - specifically those related to the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Management System Advisory Circular 5200-37. The SMS Program Manager will evaluate how these regulatory changes impact the Port and its operations, ensuring ongoing compliance and proactive risk management. In addition to regulatory oversight, the role demands strategic leadership in developing and monitoring both long and short-term safety program plans. This includes comprehensive risk assessments, budget tracking, milestone setting, schedule adjustments, and deadline adherence. The SMS Program Manager will analyze data to detect trends and patterns that can help improve airfield safety performance, driving initiatives that align with key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational priorities. Critical communication responsibilities include creating detailed management reports, weekly safety dashboards, and publishing safety documents to keep all stakeholders informed and engaged. Technological proficiency plays an important role in this position. The manager will administer the Veoci SMS data management platform alongside Office 365 SharePoint and MS Teams to support the Aviation Division’s safety efforts. Equally important is the commitment to quality improvement through targeted project and process mitigation strategies aimed at reducing operational costs, increasing productivity, and minimizing rework and waste. This strategic approach results in enhanced customer satisfaction and business optimization. The position will also represent the Port at industry groups, committees, and meetings with other airports and government agencies, providing professional and knowledgeable advocacy on safety matters. Candidates for this role should bring extensive experience in aviation operations, safety, and risk management, with a preference for those holding relevant certifications such as the AAAE Airport Certified Employee Safety Management Systems certification. Successful applicants must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, relationship-building capabilities, and a deep understanding of risk and safety management constructs. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday during regular business hours, with occasional off-shift and snow operation duties to address urgent operational issues. The work environment is primarily office-based but requires adaptability to work in active airfield environments characterized by high noise levels. A hybrid work setup is supported at management’s discretion. Candidates must be residents of Washington State within 30 days of employment to comply with residency requirements and are subject to stringent background and security checks including TSA and FBI screenings and must obtain specific security clearances within stipulated time frames. The Port of Seattle provides an extensive benefits package that recognizes and rewards the contributions of its employees. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a mission-driven organization that values equity, diversity, and inclusion as key drivers of innovation and strength. Employees benefit from an environment that supports career development, work-life balance, and continuous learning. The position not only plays a critical role in ensuring safe and compliant airport operations but also contributes to the Port’s overarching goals of promoting economic opportunity, sustainability, and quality of life throughout the region.
