The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is a vital government agency dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure, environmental health, and safety within the County of Los Angeles. Currently, the Department of Public Works is actively seeking qualified candidates for an emergency Safety Inspector position. This opening comes in response to a local emergency declared due to recent devastating windstorms and wildfires such as the Palisades and Eaton Fires that have severely impacted communities across Los Angeles County. The need for skilled Safety Inspectors is critical to assist in mobilizing resources, conducting safety inspections, and ensuring compliance with relevant occupational safety regulations as the County works to recover and rebuild from these natural disasters.
This is an open competitive recruitment with applications beginning on May 14, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and will remain open until the position is filled. Applicants who meet the requisites are eligible for an initial emergency employment period of up to 90 days, designed to evaluate performance with potential for permanent appointment based on successful assessment results. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to public safety and disaster recovery efforts in a meaningful capacity while gaining valuable experience within a dynamic governmental agency.
As a Safety Inspector under emergency employment, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive safety inspections of the department’s facilities, equipment, work practices, and environments to verify compliance with Cal/OSHA standards and other safety regulations. This includes inspecting for hazards such as ergonomics issues, confined spaces, respiratory protection needs, asbestos presence, and more. You will investigate accidents, interview witnesses, analyze safety records, and prepare detailed reports to help prevent future incidents. Additionally, you will participate in safety training, develop educational materials, and advise supervisors and staff on accident prevention and regulatory compliance.
In this role, you will also engage with various department and county safety committees, support the preparation of safety manuals, and help implement new safety procedures or equipment requirements. Your efforts will directly support the County’s commitment to a safe and healthy workplace, improve community safety standards, and uphold rigorous safety protocols during the critical period of disaster recovery.
