The Jr. Sous position at Urban Plates is an entry-level leadership role within the Operations department designed for team members eager to advance into management. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this role offers an excellent opportunity to develop culinary and leadership skills in a fast-paced restaurant environment. With a classification of non-exempt, the pay rate ranges from $16.50 to $18.00 per hour plus average tips ranging from $4.27 to $5.03 per hour, based on data from other Northern California restaurant locations. The Jr. Sous assists the management team in ensuring the highest food quality and consistent presentation for guests. Responsibilities include receiving food and packaging orders, opening and closing the kitchen, expediting meal preparation, assembling takeout orders, and maintaining the organization, cleanliness, and sanitation of all food-related work areas and equipment. This role requires a strong foundation in culinary techniques to execute menu items accurately and consistently, as well as the ability to monitor meal quality, portion control, and temperature standards. The Jr. Sous also supports operational efficiency by helping control food and labor costs, managing inventory, and maintaining safety standards within the kitchen environment. This role ensures kitchen equipment is maintained and cleaned properly and fosters a culture of safety by upholding all safety protocols and reporting injuries promptly. Additionally, the Jr. Sous plays a critical part in team member support by facilitating meal and rest breaks and helping maintain a positive workplace. Effective communication is crucial in this role, as the Jr. Sous coordinates with management, team members, and guests to promptly address inquiries and resolve issues. Proficiency in operating the point-of-sale system is necessary for accurately handling takeout orders and completing sales. The Jr. Sous is also responsible for setting the tone for each shift and assuming accountability for shift outcomes, including securing the building at closing. This role demands physical stamina, the ability to work under time constraints, and a high level of motivation and dedication. The Jr. Sous will thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism, guest focus, and teamwork. Ideal candidates will have experience in food service or hospitality and exhibit excellent guest service and interpersonal skills. Being bilingual in Spanish is considered a plus.
