The company places a high priority on employee safety and wellness, including offering benefits like coverage of toll commuting costs and mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations (with accommodations for medical or religious reasons). The position of Traffic Controller I at ERC plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and smooth flow of traffic through the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels by supporting operational functions and incident management within the Operations Control Room. Reporting to an Operations Control Room Supervisor or other supervisory staff, this role is essential for monitoring traffic conditions, coordinating with emergency responders, operating traffic management systems, and ensuring prompt response to incidents and emergencies. The position offers a starting rate of $20.00 per hour and requires adherence to strict safety and operational protocols.
The Traffic Controller I monitors and operates a range of sophisticated systems including CCTV cameras, variable message signs, traffic signals, and SCADA systems which control tunnel ventilation, fire safety, environmental monitoring, and power distribution. The position demands a high level of situational awareness and the ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergency situations, making coordination with local police, fire, and rescue teams a daily responsibility. Maintaining detailed logs, reports, and communication records is a key part of the role to support operational transparency and continuous improvement.
ERC values professionals who can remain calm under pressure, apply standard operating procedures meticulously, and deliver excellent oral and written communication. The role also requires good computer skills for managing reporting systems such as the Virginia Traffic system and the Issue Trak event management platform. Knowledge of the Hampton Roads interstate area, particularly the Downtown and Midtown Tunnel vicinities, is preferred but not mandatory. Employees work primarily in a control room environment but may be required to visit job sites occasionally, requiring flexibility and adherence to safety measures in varying weather and traffic conditions.
