U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security that provides a critical mission of protecting America’s borders and ensuring national security. As an elite and highly trained team of more than 60,000 professionals, CBP officers play a vital role in safeguarding U.S. interests by enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws, combating illicit activities, and facilitating legitimate trade and travel. CBP’s workforce is dedicated to upholding the safety and economic prosperity of the United States while embracing values such as camaraderie, pride, and a firm sense of purpose. The Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) position offers an exceptional career opportunity for individuals interested in law enforcement as a fulfilling and stable profession. This role is designed for committed individuals who possess strong observational, investigative, and interpersonal skills, along with a willingness to serve the nation. CBPOs conduct comprehensive inspections of individuals and conveyances entering the United States, determine admissibility for entry, and work to prevent illegal entry, smuggling, and trafficking of contraband, including illegal drugs. CBPOs contribute to national security by deterring criminal activities and enforcing a wide array of laws and regulations at various international points of entry such as land borders, airports, and seaports. As a CBPO, recruits undergo formal, paid pre-academy training before attending the 101-day Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Academy, where they receive instruction in law enforcement techniques, immigration laws, firearms training, physical fitness, and cargo examination. CBPOs may be assigned to one of numerous mission-critical duty locations across the United States and territories, including border zones in Arizona, California, Florida, and many others, with some locations offering additional salary incentives to attract qualified applicants. The position is a career ladder role with federal General Schedule pay grades ranging from GS-5 to GS-12. Starting salaries range from $40,332 to $109,952 per year, adjusted by locality pay, with eligibility for significant overtime compensation. Beyond competitive salaries, CBPOs enjoy excellent federal employment benefits such as health and dental insurance, generous leave programs, retirement plans including the Thrift Savings Plan, and career advancement opportunities. The role requires U.S. citizenship and residency, with specific age restrictions aligning with federal law enforcement retirement provisions. Veterans may qualify for special appointment provisions that exempt them from age limitations. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to meet the physical, educational, and experience requirements stipulated by the agency and successfully complete a pre-employment examination and thorough background checks. This opportunity is ideal for individuals seeking a challenging, rewarding, and impactful role in public service where they actively contribute to the safety and prosperity of the nation. CBPOs are recognized federal law enforcement officers who uphold justice, ensure lawful trade and travel, and protect the American people every day. The diverse and dynamic environment of CBP promises extensive career growth, meaningful work, and a respected federal service path.
