Part Time System Operator I Trainee - NYC, NY

The Part Time System Operator I position in Long Island City, NY, is a critical role within WSP’s Mobility Operations Team. This position involves managing various computer-based traffic and freeway management systems to efficiently handle incidents and improve traffic conditions. The System Operator I will monitor roadways via CCTV surveillance cameras and other detection systems to ensure smooth traffic flow and traveler safety. Daily responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices, posting timely and accurate traveler information messages on Variable Message Signs (VMS), and entering incident details into Traveler Information Systems (TIS) through the Incident Management Portal (IMP). Candidates for this role should have a solid understanding of state-maintained roadways, ITS device functionality, and geographic locations of key traffic monitoring equipment such as VMS and CCTV cameras. The position requires skilled operation of ITS equipment and software for incident management, emphasizing traveler safety and quality of life. The System Operator I must follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to detect, dispatch, and document roadway incidents and collaborate with Transportation Management Centers to coordinate resources effectively. This role demands responsible and ethical decision-making and adherence to company policies, including workplace safety, health, drug/alcohol, and harassment protocols. Applicants should be prepared to work various shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with occasional short notice overtime. An exemplary attendance record is required given the nature and demands of the position. The expected salary range for this part-time position is $33,200 to $54,780 annually.
