The North County Transit District (NCTD) is a public transportation agency committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transit services in the North County region. With a focus on enhancing mobility and accessibility, NCTD operates various modes of transit including buses, trains, and paratransit services to serve communities across the area. As an agency dedicated to maintaining high standards of service and facility upkeep, NCTD emphasizes a safe and clean environment for both employees and passengers.
The role of Facilities Maintenance Custodian at NCTD is a critical position within the Maintenance of Facilities Department. This role involves general labor, cleaning, inspections, and upkeep of the transit facilities. The position is a bargained one, represented by the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART) Union. The compensation for this role is set at $20.69 per hour as per the collective bargaining agreement. This employment opportunity offers stability and a chance to be part of a dedicated team supporting public transportation infrastructure.
In this role, the Facilities Maintenance Custodian will perform routine custodial maintenance tasks, cleaning, and groundskeeping across various NCTD facilities. Key duties include cleaning offices, industrial buildings, buses, trains, coaches, and public transit centers or stations. The custodian will be responsible for responsibilities such as spill cleanup, biohazard cleaning, debris removal, sweeping, scrubbing concrete and asphalt surfaces, floor care including all types of cleaning, pressure washing, and window cleaning.
Additionally, Facilities Maintenance Custodians will assist Facilities Maintenance Technicians, perform minor touch-ups and painting jobs, graffiti removal, and non-technical inspections of district buildings and work sites. Working in both indoor and outdoor settings, custodians must use tools, equipment, and chemicals safely, wearing protective gear such as hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses, and other necessary personal protective equipment.
The position reports directly to COASTER/SPRINTER Managers and/or Shift Supervisors and does not carry direct supervisory responsibilities. Custodians may work independently or as part of a team in assigned areas. They are also expected to contribute expert knowledge and collaborate on various project teams.
Because of the physical nature of the role, candidates must be adaptable to diverse working conditions, including exposure to outdoor environments and machinery. Occasionally, business travel between district sites, governmental agencies, consultants’ facilities, and other venues may be required.
This position offers candidates an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the upkeep and maintenance of NCTD’s facilities, supporting the smooth and safe operations of transit services that thousands of residents rely on daily.
