The Jr. Sous position at Urban Plates is an entry-level leadership development role within the Operations Department, reporting directly to the General Manager. This position is designed for team members who aspire to grow into management roles by gaining hands-on experience in various kitchen and operational tasks. As a Jr. Sous, you will play a critical role in assisting the management team in ensuring excellent food quality and presentation to guests while upholding the highest standards of food safety and sanitation. With a pay rate ranging from $17.81 to $18.75 per hour, plus average tips of $3.09 to $3.23 per hour, this role offers a rewarding opportunity in a fast-paced and customer-focused restaurant environment. In this role, you will be responsible for a variety of essential duties including receiving food and packaging orders, opening and closing the kitchen, expediting and assembling take-out orders, and maintaining the organization, cleanliness, and sanitation of all food-related work areas and equipment. Your culinary knowledge and skills will be crucial as you apply advanced techniques to consistently execute menu items to the company’s quality standards, including portion control and temperature requirements. Additionally, you will support a culture of safety by adhering to safety procedures and promptly reporting any injuries. The Jr. Sous will also assist in controlling food and labor costs by helping with purchasing, receiving, managing purveyor lists, and conducting inventory checks of kitchen items. Ensuring proper par levels and proper labeling, dating, and rotation of all products are key responsibilities to maximize shelf life and maintain compliance with sanitation guidelines. Communication is a vital aspect of your role, as you will collaborate with management and interact effectively with guests and team members to address needs and resolve issues promptly. You will utilize the point-of-sale (POS) system to accurately enter guest information and complete sales for take-out orders, ensuring that all orders are packaged neatly and efficiently without compromising quality. The Jr. Sous sets the tone for the shift, taking responsibility for the results and ensuring that all closing duties, including securing the building and setting the alarm, are properly handled. This role requires a high level of self-motivation, stress management, and interpersonal skills to thrive in a high-volume environment while maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor.
