Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) is a comprehensive public school system that serves the educational needs of a large and diverse student population in Maryland. The Food Services Assistant position is a part-time, regular status role with a minimum daily working requirement of five hours and offers an hourly wage ranging from $15.57 to $27.50. This position falls under the ACE/AFSCME, Local 2250 union contract on Pay Table 400 - Grade 2, and is eligible for PGCPS benefits. The Food Services Assistant is responsible for a variety of duties related to food preparation, serving, and cleaning within the cafeteria and kitchen facilities. Typical tasks may include preparing main dishes, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, and beverages; setting up food counters and serving stations; operating kitchen equipment such as stoves, ovens, steam kettles, dishwashers, slicers, and mixers; serving food and beverages to students and faculty; and handling cash transactions when required. Additionally, Food Services Assistants assist with receiving and storing supplies, cleaning kitchen equipment, and maintaining cleanliness in work areas and dining rooms. This role is supervised closely by the Food Services Manager, ensuring adherence to food safety standards and effective meal service. Food Services Assistants are also expected to meet annual training requirements in accordance with USDA Professional Standards for School Nutrition Employees, staying current with best practices in food handling and safety. While no direct supervisory responsibilities are associated with this position, the ability to function as a cooperative team member is vital. The position is physically demanding, involving frequent standing, walking, talking, hearing, and the use of hands for food preparation and service tasks. Employees may also occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds. The job environment includes kitchen and cafeteria settings with exposure to various kitchen equipment and the need to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization.
