The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the leading orchestras in the world, known for its rich tradition, musical excellence, and deep commitment to its community. Founded in 1918, the Orchestra has built an international reputation for innovative programming and exceptional performances. It regularly performs at the iconic Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, and has a vibrant presence in the cultural scene through its concerts, tours, and outreach initiatives. In addition to its outstanding artistic contributions, The Cleveland Orchestra is dedicated to fostering donor engagement and support through high-impact fundraising and stewardship events that strengthen its financial sustainability and community connections. The Cleveland Orchestra is currently seeking a Manager of Special Events who will play a critical role in supporting the organization’s fundraising and engagement goals. This position is responsible for the strategic planning, execution, and evaluation of a robust portfolio of 60 to 70 special events annually, which range from large-scale fundraising galas to more intimate stewardship gatherings. The Manager will lead the production of major events such as the Blossom Summer Soirée, Winter Spree, and Forte, while also supporting other significant fundraisers including the annual Gala and Florida-based donor events. This role requires a highly organized and motivated professional who thrives on orchestrating complex event logistics while ensuring each event aligns with the Orchestra’s mission and donor engagement objectives. The Manager of Special Events must skillfully manage vendor relationships, coordinate with multiple internal departments, and oversee budgets to deliver seamless and memorable experiences for donors and guests. The position offers a competitive salary range of $55,000 to $70,000 and includes very generous medical and dental benefits, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match, a hybrid remote and onsite work schedule, and complimentary concert tickets. Key responsibilities for the Manager of Special Events include independently managing three major fundraising events expected to generate net revenues between $225,000 and $260,000 by developing timelines, fundraising strategies, and operational plans. The Manager will oversee approximately 45 Tier 1 stewardship events, ensuring all logistics including venue booking, catering, audiovisual support, décor, and staffing are meticulously planned and executed. This position supports collaborative corporate activations and special events while planning and executing donor events in Florida. As a liaison to volunteer groups such as Blossom Friends and Friends of The Cleveland Orchestra, the Manager will support volunteer-led initiatives and seasonal operations at the Blossom Friends Information Booth. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for negotiating vendor contracts, monitoring event budgets, and working closely with Finance to maintain fiscal accountability. This role also involves coordinating with orchestra musicians regarding performances at donor events and managing all related logistics including timely payments. Post-event analysis is key to continuous improvement, with the Manager preparing detailed evaluation reports and recommending enhancements to increase future event impact and return on investment. Ideal candidates will bring a Bachelor’s degree with at least four years of event planning or nonprofit operations experience, strong skills in vendor management, budgeting, and logistics, and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Asana, and CRM systems such as Tessitura. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential, alongside the flexibility to work evenings and weekends and travel to events in Florida and New York City when required. Preferred skills include knowledge of event design elements like floral arrangements and lighting, familiarity with classical music and chamber repertoire, and experience coordinating with professional musicians.
