The Jr. Sous position is an entry-level leadership role designed for team members aspiring to advance into management within the restaurant industry. This role involves supporting the management team to ensure excellent food quality, presentation, and operational standards are upheld to delight guests consistently. Working under the supervision of the General Manager, the Jr. Sous is responsible for various kitchen management tasks including receiving food deliveries and packaging orders, opening and closing the kitchen, expediting orders, assembly of take-out meals, as well as maintaining cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of kitchen and food preparation areas.
Earning between $17.25 and $19.05 per hour, plus average tips ranging from $4.53 to $5.14 per hour, this non-exempt position offers practical experience in culinary operations and leadership development. The Jr. Sous works closely with the culinary team to apply fundamental cooking techniques, monitor food presentation and quality, and ensure portion and temperature standards meet company policies. In addition, this role requires maintaining adequate station readiness and preparing mise-en-place for upcoming shifts to sustain operational efficiency.
Key responsibilities include supporting food and labor cost management by assisting in purchasing and inventory control, ensuring proper food safety compliance through labeling, dating, and rotating food stock, and communicating effectively with management, guests, and team members to address any issues promptly. The Jr. Sous also handles the point-of-sale system for take-out orders, helping to deliver exceptional guest experiences by efficiently packaging orders while maintaining product integrity and presentation.
Beyond daily operations, the Jr. Sous is instrumental in cultivating a positive and safe work environment by adhering to Urban Plates' safety standards, reporting incidents, ensuring kitchen equipment cleanliness and maintenance, and enforcing meal and rest breaks for team members.
