Salem, OR, USA, OR Part-Time $21 - $21
Lick Observatory, located atop Mount Hamilton in California, is a renowned astronomical observatory operated by the University of California Observatories (UCO). It is situated approximately 19 miles east of San Jose at an elevation of 4,200 feet. The observatory is not only a vital research facility for astronomers across the University of California system but also an important public education center, attracting approximately 30,000 visitors annually. Established as one of the oldest permanently occupied mountaintop observatories, Lick Observatory offers its visitors a unique blend of scientific history, cutting-edge research, and breathtaking views of the Northern California landscape. The observatory serves a diverse community of researchers, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates engaged in optical and infrared astronomy, while also managing and supporting major projects such as the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the international Thirty Meter Telescope project. The staff and facilities at Lick operate nearly every day of the year, weather permitting, demonstrating their commitment to science and public outreach alike. This ongoing recruitment is for the part-time role of Lick Observatory Guide/Gift Shop Clerk based at the Visitors Center. The role involves both educational and retail responsibilities, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in astronomy, public engagement, and customer service. Under the supervision of the Lick Observatory Public Education Manager, the incumbent will conduct guided tours of the main buildings and domes, sharing valuable historical and scientific information about the observatory with the general public. Additionally, the guide will operate the gift shop where a variety of astronomy-related souvenirs such as postcards, posters, books, and apparel are sold. The role requires someone who can provide hospitality with professionalism and enthusiasm, ensuring visitors have a memorable experience. This position is part-time with a variable schedule that requires availability on weekends and holidays. The pay rate is $21.92 per hour, with a commitment of approximately 6 hours per week. Although this position is not eligible for benefits, it offers a unique chance to work in a stimulating environment that combines science, history, and public interaction. This role is perfect for applicants who possess excellent communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and enjoy working with diverse groups of people. Previous customer service experience, basic computer proficiency for cash register operation, and a genuine interest in astronomy are desirable. Given the observatory's location at high elevation and relative remoteness, candidates should be comfortable with travel to Mount Hamilton and working in an outdoor environment. Selected candidates are required to pass a background check and comply with university policies including vaccination requirements and training. The job offers an enriching experience in a scientific institution dedicated to exploration and discovery.
