UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is a distinguished division within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center system dedicated to providing critical care transport services with utmost safety and professionalism. The position currently available is for a Full-Time Pilot to operate for MedEvac 4, based out of Pittsburgh. This opportunity offers a dynamic and highly responsible role that is crucial in maintaining the safe and efficient operation of the emergency medical aircraft. The employment schedule is structured as 7 days on duty followed by 7 days off, providing balanced work-life engagement. This position includes a generous sign-on bonus of $30,000 upon committing to a three-year work tenure, reflecting the organization's commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier talent.
As a Pilot in Command, the individual assumes full responsibility and authority for the safe operation of the aircraft during all flights operated under the STAT MedEvac system. This role is not merely that of a pilot but a critical member of the emergency medical transport team who must execute independent judgment amidst the complexity and challenges of emergency situations. The Pilot in Command must guarantee that the aircraft remains airworthy, ensure adherence to FAA regulations and company procedures, and maintain all necessary qualifications and certifications at all times. This includes thorough preflight and postflight inspections, proper maintenance documentation, and continuous proficiency in flying and navigation systems.
Given the nature of this critical care transport environment, the role demands a highly disciplined individual capable of flexible scheduling to support seamless base and system-wide coverage. The pilot works closely with flight followers and other team members to coordinate flight plans, confirm weather and NOTAM updates, and comply with all regulatory duty times and rest requirements.
Safety is paramount within the UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine culture, and pilots actively contribute to this ethos by engaging in safety briefings, reporting concerns through appropriate channels, and mentoring newer pilots within the organization. The pilot also manages all official documentation pertaining to flights, training records, payroll, and incident reporting, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
The role requires maintaining personal physical fitness, adherence to health and medical standards, and compliance with appearance and uniform policies reflecting professionalism in high-stress situations. Effective communication skills are essential for building rapport with patients, medical crews, and external stakeholders, fostering a positive environment even under demanding circumstances.
This position requires an accomplished pilot with a commercial rotorcraft-helicopter certificate and instrument rating, supplemented by extensive experience in helicopter flight hours including night and instrument flying. Preference is given to candidates with experience in helicopter EMS transport and those holding a four-year aviation-related degree.
