The Cook position within the Nutrition and Food Service department at the Providence VA Medical Center plays a crucial role in the support and healing journey of veterans by preparing nutritious, high-quality meals. This full-time role involves working 40 hours per week and offers an hourly wage ranging from $22.59 to $26.41, depending on experience and skill level. In this role, the cook is responsible for independently preparing and cooking a wide variety of regular and therapeutic diet meals, including diabetic, low sodium, low protein, and gluten-free options. The cook follows detailed menus, production sheets, and recipes to ensure that meals are prepared in the correct quantity and to high standards of taste, nutrition, and presentation. Essential tasks include grilling, broiling, roasting, baking, frying, steaming, stewing, braising, slicing meat items to specific sizes, assembling sandwiches, preparing fresh and frozen vegetables, baking desserts, and handling convenience and pureed foods. The cook operates various kitchen equipment safely and adheres strictly to sanitary food handling and cleaning protocols.
The nature of this position demands excellent time management skills to coordinate the preparation of multiple items with different cooking times so that meals are delivered on time and at the proper temperature. The work environment can be physically demanding, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and exposure to extremes of temperature in kitchen settings. Safety and hygiene are paramount, and appropriate protective equipment, including hair coverings and gloves, must be used at all times.
The schedule for this role is flexible to meet the needs of the medical center and includes rotating days, weekends, holidays, and shifts between the hours of 5:30 AM and 7:00 PM.
