The pilot plays an essential role in determining the airworthiness of aircraft prior to flight, ensuring compliance with all relevant publications and procedures. In this capacity, the Functional Flight Check Pilot supports highly sensitive HQ USAF operational plans and the safe air transportation of high-profile individuals such as Cabinet Members, senior military personnel, and foreign dignitaries. The role demands participation in recovery flights, ferrying aircraft to maintenance depots or other designated locations, and verification of maintenance forms and records to ensure conformity with required work prior to inspections or flight testing. Additionally, the pilot assists in alert status operations, testing of modifications, and functions as a key member of Maintenance Recovery Teams during operational checks or test flights. Flight operations may include night sorties or instrument flight rules (IFR) flights during recovery, training, or ferry missions. The pilot is expected to deploy as needed to meet mission requirements and provide instruction to military aircrews regarding Functional Check Flight (FCF) procedures, strictly adhering to Performance Work Statement (PWS) requirements. The role also requires the ability to interpret meteorological data for filing accurate flight plans and to handle navigational and communication equipment with proficiency.
