The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is a dedicated state agency responsible for protecting the public by preparing court-involved youth to become successful citizens. As part of its mission, DJJ strives to provide effective interventions that support youth, strengthen families, and enhance communities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The department is committed to upholding public safety while fostering a nurturing environment that helps guide juveniles toward positive life outcomes. With a focus on comprehensive rehabilitation, the DJJ works through various facilities and programs to offer education, vocational training, counseling, and treatment for youth in their care.
Within this impactful environment, the DJJ is currently seeking a part-time Housekeeper to join its team at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center (JCC) located in Chesterfield, Virginia. This role offers hourly wage pay with a hiring range between $18.50 and $18.91 per hour, categorized under Trades and Operations in the public sector. The position's hours run Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with no more than 30 hours per week. Eligible evening housekeepers will receive a $500 sign-on bonus, providing an attractive incentive for qualified candidates.
The Housekeeper plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and sanitary conditions of the facility. This includes routine janitorial tasks and custodial duties across sixteen buildings, including office spaces, one educational school building, and two vocational/trade school buildings on the Bon Air campus. The position ensures that public areas such as lobbies, hallways, and restrooms are kept clean and orderly, contributing to a safe and hygienic environment for both staff and residents.
Given the sensitive nature of the facility and its residents, this role also requires strict adherence to health and safety regulations, including those set forth by OSHA and EPA. Employees are expected to manage the use of industrial-grade cleaning equipment, apply proper sanitation techniques, and carefully handle chemicals and cleaning solutions following Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and related guidelines to prevent exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other hazards. The role also demands use of appropriate personal protective equipment to safeguard oneself and others while performing various tasks.
In addition to the operational requirements, candidates for this position must be able to work responsibly with confidential information commonly accessed within the Department of Juvenile Justice. Maintaining confidentiality is a key component of this role, ensuring that sensitive data remains secure and only shared through authorized means. The ability to manage multiple cleaning tasks effectively while following industry standards and safety practices is essential for success in this part-time role.
The Housekeeper position at DJJ not only contributes to the daily cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities but also supports the broader mission of the department by fostering an environment conducive to rehabilitation and positive development for the youth under their care. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who take pride in their work, are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and desire to make a meaningful contribution to public service within a supportive team environment.
