The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is the premier law enforcement organization in Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Serving a vibrant and diverse city that hosts over 19 million visitors annually and is home to nearly 700,000 residents along with 21,000 private businesses, MPD stands as one of the most highly trained and diverse police departments in the country. Comprising over 4,500 members, including approximately 3,850 sworn officers and over 650 civilian employees, the department is dedicated to safeguarding not just the residents of Washington, D.C., but also visitors from around the world. MPD takes pride in its commitment to public safety and its integral role in protecting the capital of the United States. This specific role is situated within the Special Operations Division of the Homeland Security Bureau (HSB) and is responsible for piloting an Airbus AS350B3 helicopter to support various law enforcement activities. The Helicopter Pilot’s primary duties center around aerial surveillance, search and rescue operations, traffic monitoring and reporting, and the timely dissemination of information to ground units and command centers. This position is crucial for maintaining public safety through the prevention and apprehension of law violators as well as protecting life and property. The Helicopter Pilot acts as the final authority on safe aircraft operations, responsible for interpreting weather reports, determining flight altitudes and routes, and ensuring the safety of all missions. The pilot supports ground units by providing critical aerial assistance, coordinating mission communications, and maintaining situational awareness during patrols, search and rescue missions, and surveillance tasks. Flight missions are conducted both during day and night, requiring the pilot to locate suspects, search for missing persons, and provide live video feeds to the Joint Operations Command Center (JOCC) and other law enforcement entities. Additional responsibilities include transporting personnel and equipment for specialized missions such as Emergency Response Team operations, K-9 units, and Dive Teams. The pilot is also tasked with maintaining detailed flight logs following FAA regulations and agency protocols, keeping abreast of FAA airworthiness directives and making operational adjustments accordingly. River and traffic monitoring are also part of the role, as the pilot observes major thoroughfares for emergencies, accidents, or obstructions and communicates critical information to relevant city agencies. The position operates within a 24/7 schedule and is deemed essential, often requiring after-hours on-call availability, including weekends and holidays. It is a safety-sensitive position, necessitating thorough background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and continuous operational vigilance. While there is no known promotion potential for this role, it offers a significant opportunity to serve in a highly specialized law enforcement capacity that impacts the safety and security of the nation's capital. Employees of the Metropolitan Police Department enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, disability insurance, and a strong retirement plan with employer-contributed 401a savings options after one year of employment. Additional perks such as discounts on wireless services, gym memberships, and amusement park tickets further enhance the employment experience at MPD. The department is proud to be an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring all qualified candidates receive fair consideration regardless of any protected categories.
