The Jr. Sous position at Urban Plates is an entry-level leadership development role within the Operations department, aimed at team members who aspire to grow into management positions. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this non-exempt role is based at a restaurant location and offers a competitive hourly wage between $19.00 and $21.00 plus average tips ranging from $4.54 to $5.11 per hour. The Jr. Sous is responsible for assisting the management team in executing excellent food quality and presentation for guests. This position entails opening and closing kitchen duties, receiving food and packaging orders, expediting, assembling take-out orders, and maintaining organization, cleanliness, and sanitation of all food-related work areas and equipment.
In addition, the Jr. Sous applies thorough knowledge of culinary techniques to consistently execute menu items, ensures proper station setup prior to service, and maintains mis-en-place for the next shift. The role supports a culture of safety by adhering to safety standards, using kitchen equipment properly, and ensuring equipment maintenance. Financial oversight is part of the duties, including assisting in controlling food and labor costs, purchasing, receiving, and inventory management. The Jr. Sous also ensures team members receive their meal and rest breaks and complies with accurate time recording. Communication with management, guests, and team members is key to promptly addressing needs and solving problems.
This role requires a proactive approach to kitchen management, product labeling and rotation to ensure food safety and sanitation compliance, and maintaining a clean and presentable production area. The Jr. Sous utilizes the point-of-sale (POS) system for order entry and sale completion and ensures the proper packaging and presentation of take-out orders. The Jr. Sous sets the tone for their shift and is accountable for shift results, including securing the building at closing. This position also includes various other job-related duties as necessary, some of which may be similar or incidental in nature.
Urban Plates seeks candidates who possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably with 1-2 years of food service or hospitality experience, who are at least 21 years old. Basic math skills and excellent communication skills in English are required, and bilingual Spanish is a plus. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong guest service and interpersonal skills, can handle stress in a high-volume environment while maintaining a positive demeanor, effectively problem solves, prioritizes tasks, and upholds standards and procedures. They must also be self-motivated, able to operate and maintain kitchen equipment, work collaboratively, and maintain a professional appearance. Passion for training and supporting team members with validations and training exercises is highly valued.
Working conditions include functioning indoors and outdoors in a restaurant environment through all seasons and weather conditions, often in confined spaces with fluctuating temperatures around hot ovens and stove tops. Physical demands include extended standing, mobility, reaching, bending, squatting, stooping, and lifting items up to 50 pounds. Frequent handwashing and finger and hand dexterity are also required.
