The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is one of the largest educational systems in the United States, dedicated to providing high-quality education to millions of students across its five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within its many divisions, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) plays a critical role in promoting student health and well-being through nutritious and appealing meal options. Serving over 560,000 lunches daily alongside 190,000 breakfasts and a combination of 114,000 snacks and suppers for afterschool programs, OFNS is committed to maintaining and advancing the nutritional standards in NYC public schools. This impressive scale reflects the DOE’s deep commitment to supporting student success through comprehensive nutritional programs guided by USDA regulations and best practices in food service management. As a significant entity within the city’s educational framework, the DOE continuously seeks qualified professionals to ensure its programs thrive, grow, and meet evolving health and safety standards. The Food Service Manager position at the DOE offers a unique opportunity for experienced food service professionals to lead and manage food operations in a dynamic, multi-location setting within public schools. Key responsibilities include implementing nutritious menus developed under USDA regulations, conducting food safety compliance checks, managing special meal preparations such as breakfast in the classroom, scheduling and training kitchen staff, and overseeing food inventory and records to ensure efficient operations. Additionally, the manager plays an important role in nutrition education efforts, potentially assisting teachers and participating in professional development to promote the health benefits of the school meal programs. The compensation for this role starts at a competitive annual salary of $57,142, with internal candidates assured not to earn less than their current DOE salary. This full-time civil service position supports career growth within a stable government environment with a focus on public service. The DOE embraces diversity and encourages applicants from all backgrounds within the NYC tri-state area to apply. Residency in New York City is not required. With a comprehensive benefits package, opportunities for advancement, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to child nutrition and health within one of the largest urban school districts in the nation, the School Food Service Manager role offers a fulfilling and impactful career path. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter and are invited to indicate interest in eligibility programs such as the 55-a program for persons with disabilities.
