As a Firefighter with the Department of Military Affairs, you will undertake a highly specialized and essential role focused on emergency response, fire prevention, and operational readiness within a highly dynamic environment. This role involves responding to a wide array of emergency situations, including aircraft fires, structural and vehicle fires, hazardous materials incidents, and other threats such as terrorist attacks or weapons of mass destruction. Firefighters are tasked with rapid and effective intervention to protect lives, property, and national security interests in and around the Jacksonville International Airport and other assigned locations. They must be proficient in firefighting techniques, emergency medical services, rescue operations, and the maintenance of firefighting equipment and systems.
The role requires candidates to possess specific Department of Defense certifications (Fire Fighter II, Airport Fire Fighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper, ARFF & Tender) and to complete the DoD Fire Protection School along with other career development courses accredited nationally or internationally within the first year of employment. Applicants must hold a valid Florida Certificate of Compliance as a Firefighter, which can be alternatively attained through reciprocity agreements. Physical fitness, the ability to perform under stressful conditions, and excellent communication skills are critical to performing this role effectively.
Beyond emergency operations, the firefighter will be involved in essential fire prevention activities such as conducting fire drills, inspecting fire safety equipment, and managing fire alarm control center communications.
