The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is a distinguished Research and Service Institution dedicated to advancing geological science and providing essential services to a broad range of stakeholders. With an employee base of approximately 180 skilled professionals, KGS plays a vital role in geological research, education, and public service within the state and beyond. The institution is committed to maintaining high standards of safety, operational efficiency, and resource management to support its varied activities and maintain a conducive work environment for all staff members. We are currently seeking a dedicated and organized professional to oversee the comprehensive operation of the facilities functions at KGS. This role requires an individual who can skillfully manage the maintenance and physical infrastructure of multiple buildings, coordinate vehicle fleet management, and support the institution's budget and safety protocols. The position offers a work schedule of 30-40 hours per week with a set schedule, providing a stable and consistent working environment. In this role, the successful candidate will focus 60% of their efforts on building and facilities management. Key responsibilities include identifying maintenance needs and equipment replacement requirements across KGS facilities, and initiating and overseeing corresponding work orders. The candidate will organize and coordinate construction, renovation, and remodeling projects, working closely with KGS staff to assist with space allocation within buildings. As the designated Safety Officer for KGS facilities, the individual will ensure compliance with relevant state laws and regulations, develop and maintain facility evacuation plans and safety protocols, and manage the asset inventory meticulously. About 30% of the candidate’s duties involve managing the fleet of 16 vehicles assigned to KGS staff. This includes coordinating appointments for vehicle maintenance, recalls, and repairs, maintaining detailed repair logs, and managing purchasing card scheduling and vehicle checkout for staff use. The role also requires accurate record-keeping regarding vehicle mileage, fuel receipts, grant tracking, and travel purposes, culminating in monthly reports submitted to appropriate KGS personnel. An additional 5% of the role entails creating and monitoring the annual building operations budget, ensuring that expenditures remain within approved limits throughout the fiscal year. The remaining 5% involves performing other duties as assigned, such as assisting with event setup, teardown, and planning, enhancing the overall support system within the institution. This position demands a proactive, detail-oriented, and collaborative individual capable of managing multiple responsibilities efficiently. Our ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and communication skills, a solid understanding of facilities and vehicle fleet management, and the ability to enforce safety and operational standards effectively. By joining KGS, the successful applicant will contribute to the smooth and efficient functioning of a premiere geological research institution while ensuring safety and resource optimization across facilities and vehicles.
