Working schedules offer flexibility, with shifts either Monday through Friday or Thursday through Monday, both from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. This position contributes significantly to the university’s commitment to providing a clean and safe living and work environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Custodians at SJSU use approved, safe cleaning techniques and materials as specified by University Housing Services. Their duties encompass a variety of housekeeping tasks such as cleaning community and common area bathrooms, coordinating trash and recycling programs, and supporting guest overnight programs within the residential facilities. The role requires skillful operation of motorized cleaning equipment including vacuums, high-speed floor buffing machines, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums. Custodians must be able to work independently or alongside others depending on assignment, and handle high levels of interaction with customers while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. The role demands a strong ability to multi-task and prioritize to effectively meet deadlines associated with the university’s One Stop Shop model for higher education customer service. Additionally, this position requires a valid California driver’s license, successful completion of a Defensive Drivers Training Program, and compliance with all OSHA mandated physical and medical examinations.
