This job opportunity is with the Club at Joint Base Andrews located in Maryland, a significant establishment serving the United States Air Force and Space Force community. Joint Base Andrews is a premier military installation known for its high standards of service and morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR) activities designed to support military members, their families, and guests. The Club itself is a central venue for social, dining, and event functions that enhance the quality of life for personnel stationed at the base. It operates under Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) status, which means it is funded through the revenue it generates rather than appropriated government funds. This gives it a degree of operational flexibility, while still supporting key morale and welfare activities for the military community.
The position being offered is a flexible, non-benefit-bearing role focused on food preparation and cooking duties within the Club. The role is physically active and demands continual standing and walking, alongside frequent movements such as stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. It also requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally heavier items with assistance. This role is ideal for candidates passionate about culinary work who thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments and who are eager to contribute to the club’s mission of serving high-quality food to its members efficiently and safely.
The job involves performing a range of simple cooking tasks that include preparing common breakfast items like pancakes, sausage, and eggs, as well as grilling hamburgers, fresh or canned vegetables, and hot cereals. Additionally, the position requires cooking broiled meats, preparing concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, and gravies, making cold sandwich fillings, and handling convenience foods such as frozen hash browns, fish fillets, and chicken nuggets. Some cooks may also have the opportunity to prepare and bake pizza, adding variety and complexity to the daily tasks.
Beyond cooking, this role entails fundamental food preparation activities such as peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading ingredients. The cook will need to accurately weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients according to recipes to ensure consistency and quality, while minimizing preparation time and reducing food waste. The position also includes maintaining the salad bar, portioning food for service, and properly storing leftovers in accordance with established food safety procedures. Kitchen cleanliness and sanitation are vital components of this role, thus washing and cleaning kitchen equipment thoroughly are expected responsibilities.
Candidates must be prepared to work shifts that cover evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations, reflecting the Club’s commitment to serving the base community at a variety of times. The job requires compliance with food handler safety and certification standards, a pre-employment physical, and a background investigation to ensure suitability for the role. This position welcomes applications from all individuals, including military spouses, veterans, and those with priority hiring preferences, so long as they meet the required qualifications and conditions outlined in the application process.
Overall, this cooking position at the Joint Base Andrews Club offers an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals or enthusiastic cooks to engage in meaningful work supporting the morale and welfare of military personnel. While flexible and physically demanding, the role provides valuable hands-on experience in food preparation at a respected military institution, fostering a team environment dedicated to quality, safety, and efficiency.
