This role is a heavy travel position that requires candidates to be willing and able to travel for 3-4 months at a time within designated eastern or western regions. The position involves operating specialized test vehicles, also known as detector cars, which might be rail-bound passenger cars or box trucks modified to ride on railroad tracks. The core responsibilities include operating the vehicle safely on and off railroad tracks in various road conditions, performing comprehensive vehicle inspections, setting up crucial testing equipment, and maintaining and repairing the vehicle and detector carriage. The work is physically demanding and requires crawling under vehicles with limited clearance, climbing ladders or steps repeatedly, and performing manual inspections. Safety is of paramount importance, with personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and safety vests mandated for all fieldwork. This is a physically intensive job that demands strength, stamina, and careful attention to safety protocols.
The qualified candidate will be actively involved in multiple essential functions such as driving the detector car, supporting crew members with measurements and data recordings, performing ground examinations of rails, and handling the department’s communications. Accurate verbal and radio communication skills are essential, especially for coordinating safety rules, traffic pattern changes, and identifying obstructions on the rail. Additionally, the role includes servicing and maintaining the detector car’s motor, body, and equipment, cleaning the vehicle, and strictly adhering to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Field conditions can be extreme, both in weather and physical environment, reinforcing the necessity for strict safety compliance and detailed inspection responsibilities.
A $1,000 sign-on bonus is offered after 60 days of employment, showcasing Sperry's commitment to attracting talented and dedicated individuals.
