The role of Rail Flaw Detection Vehicle Operator is a full-time position that requires a high degree of travel commitment, with candidates expected to operate within the eastern or western regions for 3 to 4 months at a time. This position involves skilled operation of specialized rail-bound vehicles, which may resemble railroad passenger cars or modified box trucks adapted to travel on tracks. The operator is responsible for driving the detector car under various road and weather conditions while constantly monitoring equipment and rail health data.
The operator’s duties extend beyond driving to include comprehensive vehicle inspections, equipment setup, and routine maintenance. They must service, maintain, and repair both the vehicle and the rail inspection equipment, often performing tasks in physically challenging positions such as crawling under the vehicle with minimal clearance or working in awkward postures. The job demands excellent physical stamina, coordination, and the ability to follow strict safety protocols.
In this role, communication is critical. Operators must effectively convey information to pilot and crew members, comply with all safety rules, interpret signals on railroad tracks, and respond quickly to alarms or radio communications. A strong understanding of customer-specific procedures and railway safety standards is essential.
The company provides the necessary personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests, with additional protection like safety goggles and gloves required when handling vehicle fluids. Sperry also provides training in Road Worker Safety annually to ensure compliance with industry safety standards.

- High school diploma or equivalent
- valid CDL Class A or B license with air brake endorsement
- willingness and ability to travel extensively for 3-4 months at a time within assigned regions
