NEMS (Neighborhood Emergency Management Service) is a community-focused organization dedicated to ensuring safe and healthy environments through diligent facility maintenance and support services. With a commitment to diversity and equal opportunity, NEMS actively seeks to enrich its workforce by welcoming applicants from varied backgrounds, including those with arrest and conviction records as outlined under the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance. The organization operates within San Francisco and prides itself in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and safety within its department buildings and surrounding grounds. NEMS is known for its commitment to both its members and staff, emphasizing positive interactions and prompt responses to facility-related requests. The organization offers competitive benefits including full medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage for employees and their families as well as company contributions to a 401(k) retirement plan. The Janitor position at NEMS is a full-time, non-exempt role responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of NEMS department buildings and their surroundings. This role requires a self-motivated individual who can complete assigned duties with minimal supervision while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor when interacting with members and staff. The janitor is expected to actively respond to requests and either personally handle the matter or direct it to the appropriate staff member. Day-to-day duties include cleaning and restocking restrooms and kitchen areas, maintaining sidewalks and windows, and sanitizing floors through sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, polishing, and waxing. Additional responsibilities involve trash collection and disposal, maintaining checklists for assigned areas, and opening or closing building doors at the start and end of shifts. The janitor also handles various chemicals responsibly and performs unskilled maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and clocks. This role may extend to cleaning company vehicles and assisting in the movement of furniture and equipment as needed. Vigilance in reporting any incidents or hazardous conditions to supervisory staff is a critical component of the job, as is notifying supervisors when housekeeping supplies require replenishment. Janitorial staff may also participate in training activities and undertake other duties as assigned by management. This position requires individuals capable of strenuous work, with a solid understanding of cleaning methods and equipment, and the safe operation of motorized cleaning devices. NEMS values communication skills; this role requires the ability to read and write in English to comply with safety rules and complete necessary training. Bilingual proficiency in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) is preferred but not mandatory. The ideal candidate will have janitorial certification and relevant previous experience to succeed and advance within the organization. Overall, NEMS offers a supportive work environment that promotes safety, professionalism, and inclusivity for all employees.
