The Barista & Cafe Assistant role at Amarillo College is a pivotal front-of-house position within the college's cafe and bookstore environment. The role primarily involves preparing and serving coffee, tea, and specialty beverages, along with assisting in daily cafe operations which include food preparation and light cooking tasks. In this role, the Barista & Cafe Assistant is expected to greet and engage with customers, accurately handle cash and credit transactions using point-of-sale (POS) systems, and maintain consistency and quality in beverage preparation following established recipes and presentation standards. The individual will also operate and maintain various cafe equipment – including espresso machines, grinders, blenders, and brewers – ensuring their cleanliness and functionality. On the food preparation side, responsibilities include assembling sandwiches, salads, and grab-and-go meals, as well as performing light cooking duties with strict adherence to food safety and hygiene guidelines. This position requires standing for extended periods and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, making it physically demanding yet rewarding for those energetic and committed to delivering an excellent customer experience. Flexibility in scheduling is also crucial, as the cafe operates during varied hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
