As a bakery department of Hy-Vee, the bakery team plays a vital role in providing fresh, delicious baked goods that meet customer needs and contribute to the overall shopping satisfaction. The role of Baker involves preparing bakery items for orders and display replenishment while maintaining an inviting atmosphere through excellent customer service and teamwork. This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and typically requires a hands-on approach in handling bakery equipment and products.
As a Baker at Hy-Vee, you will be responsible for a range of tasks that include baking, frying, and preparing all bakery products according to production schedules. The role emphasizes customer interaction, requiring Bakers to provide courteous, friendly, and efficient service, always promoting a positive image of the company. Bakers are expected to greet customers warmly, assist with product location, handle special orders, and maintain a clean and organized work area. You will support both customers and fellow team members by ensuring that bakery displays are well-stocked with fresh items and that production deadlines are met efficiently.
Leading and supporting bakery clerks and other team members such as apprentice bakers, bakery designers, and wrappers may also be part of your responsibilities. A high level of attention to safety, sanitation, and quality control is essential, as is the ability to use bakery equipment such as mixers, ovens, fryers, sheeters, and proof boxes correctly and safely.
In addition, Bakers at Hy-Vee must contribute to ordering supplies, maintaining department schedules, and supporting other store areas when needed. This fast-paced position demands physical stamina and the ability to exert force when lifting or moving products, alongside good visual acuity to monitor product freshness and safety conditions. Working conditions may expose employees to flour dust, temperature extremes, noise, and occasional cleaning chemicals, necessitating adherence to safety protocols.

                - High school diploma or equivalent
 - Six months to one year of related bakery experience
 - Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
 - Visual ability including depth perception, color vision and field of vision
 - Physical ability to stoop, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions
 - Willingness to adhere to company hygiene and dress codes
 - Ability to work scheduled shifts reliably
 - Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen
