The role of a Baker at Hy-Vee is integral to the company’s bakery department and overall customer experience. This position is non-exempt, with an hourly wage range from $14.00 to $17.50 based on experience. The Baker is responsible for baking fresh products to fulfill customer orders and replenish bakery displays. This role requires a detail-oriented and customer-focused individual who can maintain high standards of food quality, safety, and sanitation. Beyond baking, the Baker serves as a frontline representative of the company, engaging with customers and team members to provide courteous, friendly, and efficient service.
The Baker works closely with the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers, and Bakery Department Manager, while also overseeing roles such as Apprentice Baker, Bakery Designer, Wrapper, and Fryer. Key competencies expected from a successful candidate include partnership, growth mindset, results orientation, customer focus, and professionalism.
The responsibilities include managing daily production schedules, ensuring the freshness and appearance of bakery goods, and adhering strictly to sanitation and safety guidelines. The Baker is also expected to handle customer interactions with a caring and patient demeanor, whether assisting in product selection, answering phone inquiries, or addressing customer requests and suggestions. Additionally, the position requires basic maintenance oversight of bakery equipment to prevent operational disruptions.
This fast-paced environment involves physical activities such as lifting, standing, and repetitive motions, and exposure to temperature extremes, flour dust, and occasional cleaning chemicals. The Baker must comply with company dress and hygiene standards and report to work punctually. - high school diploma or equivalent
- over six months up to one year of similar or related experience
- ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
- ability to perform physical activities such as stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
- must pass pre-employment drug screen
