The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), through its Community and Technical College, is seeking dedicated and skilled Flight Operations Desk Assistants (ODAs) to support the daily operations of the Flight Operations department within its Aviation Technology Division. UAA is a public higher education institution committed to providing quality education and training in various fields, including aviation technology. The Aviation Technology Division at UAA is renowned for its comprehensive programs that prepare students for successful careers in the aviation industry. Situated at the Aviation Technology Complex at Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, this department plays a pivotal role in the practical education and operational management related to flight operations. The role of Flight Operations Desk Assistant is an integral student employment opportunity designed to assist in managing flight scheduling, administrative tasks, and customer service requirements that facilitate smooth operations and compliance with aviation standards. There are two employment tiers in this labor pool: ODA Level I and ODA Level II. Each level has distinct responsibilities and experience prerequisites, allowing students at different stages of their academic and professional journey to contribute effectively. These positions are on-campus student employee roles, offering flexible working hours that accommodate class schedules. Consequently, work shifts may include mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends, depending on department needs and individual availability. ODAs serve as essential contacts within the flight operations team, requiring proficiency in office practices, communication skills, and discretion. Candidates are expected to demonstrate capability in managing multiple tasks, utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, Google Applications, aviation scheduling, and accounting software, alongside essential knowledge of FAA regulations specific to flight training organizations. The ODA Level II position demands more advanced skills, including the ability to lead peers, draft professional correspondence, and manage aviation-related radio communications with a proficient understanding of weather and flight tracking applications. Beyond operational tasks, the roles emphasize maintaining confidentiality, handling cash and deposits accurately, and supporting customer service interactions within a diverse campus community. Both levels require familiarity with office equipment such as copiers, printers, credit card machines, and computers. For ODA Level I, a basic understanding of aviation-related software and radio operation suffices, while Level II expects extensive clerical experience within an aviation environment, leadership experience, and ongoing aviation-related academic pursuits. The positions are limited to undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester or those between semesters with plans to enroll. Additionally, candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or have approval from the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. The pay rate is $15.26 per hour, reflecting the skilled and crucial nature of the work. The University of Alaska fosters an inclusive and equitable work environment, providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities and adhering to strict policies regarding ethical conduct, non-discrimination, and campus safety. Successful applicants will be required to undergo background checks and submit comprehensive application materials, including a resume, cover letter, and professional references. These opportunities not only provide valuable hands-on experience in aviation operations but also enable students to develop professional skills crucial for future career advancement in the aviation industry. Through these positions, UAA continues to uphold its mission to prepare students with practical knowledge and competencies within a supportive academic and professional setting.
