The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) at the Anchorage International Airport is a key agency committed to keeping Alaska moving by maintaining and enhancing the state's transportation infrastructure. Located at the Anchorage International Airport, the DOT&PF is currently looking to fill multiple Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 (ESD 1) positions. This role is integral to the airport’s Communication Center (ACC), which operates around the clock, 24/7. The Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 serves as the primary communications link between Air Traffic Control, Airport Police and Fire departments, airport tenants, the traveling public, and other entities. The ESD 1's responsibility is to handle all types of calls, including urgent emergency calls and routine customer service inquiries. They monitor the airport’s security and fire alarm systems and coordinate appropriate responses to aviation emergencies for the first responders. This position requires a calm, professional demeanor and the ability to prioritize, multitask, and communicate clearly under pressure.
Working in the Airport Communication Center environment involves operating multiple communication channels, including phone lines and multi-frequency radio systems. The center consists of four workstations staffed by a minimum of two ESD 1s per shift, with employees working thirteen-hour shifts, including paid and unpaid breaks. Daily tasks involve receiving and processing calls, data entry, multitasking, and providing exceptional customer service to all callers. Effective communication skills are critical, as dispatchers must listen actively, gather accurate information, and clearly articulate detailed responses to first responders while maintaining situational awareness within the team.
Applicants must be Alaska residents and able to obtain several certifications and clearances, including fingerprint-based FBI criminal history check and Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment. The successful candidates also need to receive Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification. Physical and mental resilience is essential to perform effectively in high-pressure emergency situations and crisis conditions.
