This position is part of CAS Support Services within the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It is a full-time, onsite role that encompasses wide-ranging administrative, financial, and event management responsibilities specific to the department’s needs. The role focuses on performing administrative duties, managing the office, and assisting with financial planning and oversight of department funds. The successful candidate will also supervise work study students and serve as a liaison between multiple campus units, including interdisciplinary programs and departments that cross-list courses with Africana Studies.
A central component of this position involves providing comprehensive support for human resources and faculty needs. This includes coordinating tenure-track faculty searches, managing lecturer appointments, processing personnel changes, and assisting with faculty leave procedures. The administrator will also take charge of preparing and organizing faculty tenure and promotion dossiers in close collaboration with the College office.
The role further supports student programs by maintaining statistics on majors and minors, entering course schedules into the university system (Banner), coordinating curriculum submissions, and preparing for accreditation processes such as the annual SACS review. This position also organizes student engagement activities including annual meet-and-greet events and senior exit interviews.
Financial responsibilities include assisting in budget creation and financial reporting for departmental projects, processing scholarship requests, reviewing financial reports for accuracy, managing invoices and reimbursements, and overseeing procurement activities. Additionally, this position serves as the coordinator for the Computer Upgrade Program and manages inventory and technology coordination within the department.
Event coordination is a major duty, involving planning, organizing, and executing events and meetings for the department. The incumbent will develop protocols and procedures for events, coordinate logistics such as travel, catering, security, and technical support, and maintain communication with all stakeholders before, during, and after events. They will manage event timelines, ensure compliance with university policies, supervise personnel and vendors, and conduct post-event evaluations to improve future efforts. This role demands strong relationship management with both university partners and external vendors.
The anticipated salary for this position ranges from $47,000 to $52,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Candidates with an Associate’s degree and 4+ years of administrative and event planning experience or a High School diploma with 6+ years of similar experience are preferred.
