We are currently seeking dedicated professionals for the role of Detector Car Operator, a vital field position that demands technical skill, agility, and a readiness to travel extensively. This role is a heavy travel position with deployments lasting 3-4 months at a time either in the eastern or western regions of the United States. Operator candidates will be responsible for safely driving specialized rail-bound vehicles—either rail passenger car replicas or box trucks modified to run on rails—under a wide range of road and weather conditions. The Detector Car Operator plays a critical role in operating equipment that inspects rail track integrity by recording and interpreting data on computer systems. The job requires physical labor, including crawling under vehicles with minimal clearance, ascending ladders and steps, and conducting ground examinations of rails in various postures such as bending and kneeling. Operators must perform routine vehicle inspections, maintenance, and repairs including mechanical tasks like changing tires or replacing batteries. The nature of the role necessitates strict adherence to safety protocols, the use of personal protective equipment, and annual training in Road Worker Safety. The position demands excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with crew members safely and effectively while operating testing equipment and managing data collection. Candidates must be capable of following DOT regulations and customer-specific guidelines meticulously. The work environment is challenging; all duties are performed in the field often under extreme weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of resilience and commitment to safety.
